Call for Applications for CSOs Working on Youth, Women, Peace, and Security Agenda in Africa

The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, through the ” Gender, Peace and Security ” program and the ” Youth for Peace ” program of the African Union, is launching an initiative award ceremony in recognition of the important role that civil society plays in implementing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agendas.

This initiative is in line with the African Union’s aspiration to build a people-centered community and achieve Agenda 2063 for shared prosperity and well-being, for unity and integration, for one continent. of free citizens and horizons where the potential of women and young people is fully realized, free from want, fear and disease.

Focus Areas
  • There will be a total of six (6) selected winners who have made a substantial contribution to the implementation of the WPS and YPS agenda in their community, country. Candidates must demonstrate that they have contributed in remarkable ways through the realization of exceptional projects/activities in the following areas:
    • The prevention of sexual and gender-based violence as well as the protection of women and young people in conflict situations;
    • Processes of conflict prevention, transformation, resolution and consolidation of gender mainstreaming peace
    • Inclusive process of conflict prevention, conflict resolution and peace building peace;
    • Strengthening and effective and meaningful inclusion of women and young people in the process of peace
    • Inclusive stabilization and peacebuilding, including reconciliation, natural resource management, economic recovery and improved livelihoods, reintegration of warring factions, etc.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Eligible applicants will be assessed based on specific criteria, including:
    • Impact: Through collaboration, leadership, or innovation, nominees have made an outstanding contribution with tangible results to advancing the WPS or JPS agenda. The selected winners have inspired others through their courage and commitment
    • Community: Nominees have been active at the community level, and their achievements have advanced peace and security efforts and decision-making processes.
  • The CSO must work in the field of youth/women and peace and security in Africa;
  • The CSO must be an African civil society organization;
  • CSO must be in operation for at least 3 years and be registered in one of the 55 states UA members
  • The CSO must provide evidence of its main achievements in implementing activities related to the WPS/YPS agendas;
  • The CSO shall not be investigated for fraud, corruption, sexual abuse, exploitation sexual or other wrongdoing;
  • The CSO must have sufficient capacity to collaborate with the African Union as well as various stakeholders
Selection Process
  • CSOs eligible for this award are:
    • Civil society organizations working on issues related to the WPS and YPS agenda
    • Civil society organizations working on gender issues
    • Women’s or women’s-led networks
    • Youth or youth-led networks
    • Organizations in the field/proximity
    • Research institutes/Think-tank working on WPS and JPS issues
